Listservs, email lists or mailing lists are one of the most appreciated services on the Internet. Stay informed by subscribing to EGALE's bilingual list EGALE-E, with messages from EGALE and other subscribers. This service is free.
Confidentiality. If it is an issue for you, for example if you share an email account or log on from work, you can also subscribe to EGALE lists from a free pseudo-anonymous web-based email account and read your messages using any browser on the Internet. Bear in mind that these types of accounts aren't actually anonymous, but because your messages are stored on a server somewhere out on the net rather than on your local machine, they do provide you with an additional level of privacy. Always log out of web-based email services when you are finished, and for extra security you may want to empty or clear the cache on your PC.
Messages from EGALE-E appear in your Email inbox. Read them at your leisure, respond to the person who sent the message or send a message you think will be of interest to the whole list. Postings to the List often contain breaking news, thanks to many contributors who scan newspapers, magazines, TV, courts, legislative proceedings, and the Internet for news of interest to the Canadian GLBT community.
Netiquette. When posting messages please be sure to follow netiquette, a collection of guidelines designed to maximize everyone's enjoyment and minimize inconvenience to others. In particular, please read carefully:
Egale does not condone or permit offensive messages to be sent to the list. Do not make personal attacks on anyone (this includes name- calling) whether they be a subscriber or a member of the public. Do not advocate criminal activity, harassment, or dirty tricks against our opponents or anyone else. Such actions are grounds for removal from the list. The list is designed for discussion about news, issues, strategies, and accomplishments.
Do not publish personal private details or contact information about anyone without their express permission.
Please do not send attachments to the List—send only plain text messages. See below
for reasons. Do not send whole web pages. Although browsers will let you send a web page as an email message, please copy the URL and type a short description of the page instead.
When responding, do not let your email software quote (include) the whole message that triggered your response. Just cut and paste the sentence or two you are commenting on if needed.
NEVER reply to someone through the List with a private message. That could get embarrassing, and it annoys everyone else. Always check the email address after the word "TO:" in the line at the top of your outgoing message to make sure your private message is not going to the List before you press the Send button.
EGALE operates one bilingual mailing list at present: EGALE-E.
We will be starting a French language list very soon.
The Queerlaw Canada list messages are now posted on EGALE-E, and Queerlaw Canada is no longer available.
EGALE-E
EGALE operates a general Internet mailing list that carries announcements and news from EGALE, as well as discussions about issues of interest. Occasionally, the volume of this list can be high, though it is usually low to moderate (0–5 messages per day).
How to join the list To subscribe to EGALE-E, send an email message to majordomo@lists.egale.ca with the following in the BODY of the message: subscribe egale-e youremailaddress
How to remove yourself from the list To unsubscribe from EGALE-E, send an email message to majordomo@lists.egale.ca with the following in the BODY of the message: unsubscribe egale-e youremailaddress
How to post a message to the list once you've subscribed First, read the Netiquette, and all the notes on this page about appropriate use of the lists. Second, be sure to send only Plain Text messages to the list. This is the international email standard. Your email software has a setting to enable plain text messages. Third, it is a good idea to read the messages that are being sent to you for a few weeks to get the feel of the List. Then join in the discussion.
How to communicate with EGALE by E-mail For technical problems or questions about the website or the mailing lists, send email to webmaster@egale.ca
For questions about EGALE the organization, lobbying, membership, or legal/political issues, send email to egale.canada@egale.ca.
Replying to messages If you want to reply to a message you received from the list, you have two choices: (1) you can reply publicly to the list if you feel that everyone on the list would benefit from your comments; or (2) you can reply privately to the sender of the particular message. Your software's "reply" function will assume you want to reply to the whole list, so check the address in the "To" field of your own message before pressing SEND.
Privacy This is NOT a private mailing list; anyone can join it. Please keep in mind when writing messages that they might be read by anyone (including, by way of recent example, the Globe and Mail). We welcome this, as we want to encourage open discussions, but if you have a private message you may want to find an alternative means of sending it.
Attachments Attachments and formatted messages cannot be successfully sent to the list. If your message uses colour, bold, fonts, etc. then it is actually a hidden attachment. Attachments are the number 1 method computer viruses use to spread. Also, everyone on the list won't have the software necessary to view the file! Just send plain text e-mail messages—you will need to set your email software to "Plain Text" mode.
Queerlaw Canada
Messages that used to be posted on the Queerlaw Canada list are now found on EGALE-E (please see above).
