Safe Schools Petition

You can help collect signatures for this petition by printing the PDF version, and returning the form to Egale.

TO THE MINISTER OF EDUCATION OF (province/territory)

We, the undersigned residents of (province/territory), draw the attention of the Minister to the following:

THAT many students are harassed and bullied because of their actual or perceived sexual orientation, gender identity or gender expression;

THAT all students and teachers in K-12 schools deserve a safe, caring and inclusive environment; and that courts have ruled that all publicly funded schools have a positive duty to take action rather than wait for bullying to occur;

THAT all students and their families deserve consideration, that many students do not see themselves or their families represented in the school curriculum, and that teaching acceptance and respect is always age-appropriate;

THEREFORE, we call upon the Minister to take concrete action to provide a safe, caring and inclusive school environment for all students, teachers, and families, including those who are or are perceived to be lesbian, gay, bisexual or trans-identified, as well as children of lesbian, gay, bisexual or trans people.

Trans Human Rights Petition

TO THE HOUSE OF COMMONS IN PARLIAMENT ASSEMBLED

We, the undersigned residents of Canada, draw the attention of the House to the following:

THAT trans-identified people are subject to discrimination and harassment because of their gender identity and gender expression;

THAT the Canadian Human Rights Act does not explicitly protect people from discrimination or harassment based on their gender identity or gender expression;

THAT the lack of clear legal prohibition of transphobic discrimination legitimizes that discrimination;

THAT a Canadian Human Rights Act Review Panel unanimously recommended in 2000 that the Canadian Human Rights Act be amended to explicitly protect transgender and transsexual people from discrimination;

THEREFORE, your petitioners call upon Parliament to enact legislation to include “gender identity” and “gender expression” in the Canadian Human Rights Act.
